The SA1 is a single board computer based on the Intel StrongARM processor running Linux or Windows CE 3.0 as its operating system. This board provides many of the features found in today's PC's without he problems of legacy architecture in terms of operating system hardware. The SA1 is designed to be very modular in architecture to allow scaling of the system via PCB stuffing options. This allows a single design cycle to serve several target applications from a CPU core to a fully capable computer with video, audio, LAN, and I/O. Applications The SA1 is a general purpose Windows CE or Linux high performance controller that can be used in several different market segments and applications. The full video/audio/networking support makes the SA1 a prime candidate for point of sale or point of service applications. The ease of implementation, emote management and remote updating further emphasize this role by providing a near zero cost of ownership model. The SMIF (Simple Microcontroller InterFace) makes the SA1 a perfect fit for applications involving real time control as this standardized interface ties a microcontroller providing real time control of a task to a widely acceptable standardized graphical user interface. Implementation of this nature have been plagued in the past with one of three problems, poor real time control when a GUI processor attempts to do real time control, poor GUI when a real time control processor tries to add a user interface, or to much custom development which results in high cost and delays in time to market. Distribution and warehousing applications can make use of the low power capabilities of the SA1 and its ability to use wireless RF PC Cards to provide order fulfillment on fork trucks. Over the road distribution can use the SA1 to perform vehicle location, vehicle monitoring, and maintain DOT logs with a wireless link to the call center. Other applications include access control of tool rooms and fixed inventory by exception points. The SA1 can also be used as an OEM board for handheld applications.
